Jihadi Islam is indeed a big threat to America, but the reason for the violence of the past decade and a half stems from the continuing presence of American troops in Saudi Arabia. That is the stated caucus belli for Al Quaeda. Of course since then the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have provided more fodder. What endangers Americans are the military policies of the government which Petreus champions. How ironic that the cheerleader of the policies endangering Americans is accusing Terry Jones of the same.
The allies of the American troops in the AfPak region, the Afghan interpretor, the Pakistani informant, the Pashtun guide et al are essential for continuing military operations. But these people are already alienated by the indiscriminate bombings from unmanned drones, bombings that kill their friends and families; strikes ordered by Petreus himself. And the real danger is ... Terry Jones!
The now famous wikileaks documents also show how the American government and military are supplying weapons to the Pakistanis knowing full well that these weapons will be handed over to the Jihadists and then used to kill American soldiers. And the real danger is ... Terry Jones!
The bottom line is that the American soldiers are in Afghanistan to "protect Freedom!" (hey, I didn't make that up, that's what the advertisement says). But chief among those freedoms is the freedom of expression. The first amendment is not needed to protect speech that everyone loves; to the contrary it is to preserve speech that everyone hates. Petreus is in no position to point fingers, he is himself endangering the troops through his support and implementation of war policy and strategy.
The issues you raised are not mutually exclusive. If we don't have troops there, no issue. Since we do, there should be some intelligence and discretion exercised by thoughtful citizens, especially so-called men of God.
ReplyDeleteSo in that way, the leadership, including Republicans benefiting from fear and outrage, should have condemned the actions and tell the pastor to stand down. Too bad it took the SecDef to ask Jones to think clearly. If ever there was time for the President to come out and say someone is "acting stupidly," this would have been the time.
Terry Jones is an ignorant bigot and not representative of America as a whole. At least we hope not. The best alternative would have been if the American media ignored this whole affair. Instead, they made it far worse.
I think that Petraeus's comment was hypocritical, and I lay out the reasons why I think so. Your post (Lee @ 09272010:0914) seems to imply that you disagree, but it's not clear why.
ReplyDeleteIs Terry Jones' (now aborted) decision to burn his personal copies of Koran a bigger threat to the soldiers in Afghanistan than Petraeus's decision to keep them there in the first place(and now we know against Obama's initial preference)? If there were no troops in Afghanistan (the scenario that you mention), then Petraeus wouldn't be making any comment, so that reasoning seems beside the point.
The post is about Petraeus and not Terry Jones, as should be clear from the title.
Let me repeat what I said earlier, since I think that it is worth repeating. The first amendment is not needed to protect speech that everyone loves; on the contrary it is to preserve speech that everyone hates.
The Koran burning has taken place on April 1, and it generated a lot of excitement abroad. The presidents of Afghanistan and Pakistan have requested officially the arrest of the pastor.

consider the following news (and I can find many many such instances)
ReplyDelete"The deaths (40 civilians) have sparked a major new crisis in US-Pakistan relations, which are still reeling for the Raymond Davis fiasco of the past month and a half. The Pakistani government summoned the US ambassador to demand an apology, but no such apology appears to be forthcoming."
no apologies for indiscriminately killing 40 people, but for Terry Jones to destroy his own property ...
I hope it's clear that the point is the hypocrisy of the US government/Patreus rather than glorifying Terry Jones.
